Private Phillip Stoops
6th Pa H.A, Co. I

Born: June 13th or 15th 1841 - Venango Co, Pa.
Died: November 13, 1927 - Benzonia, MI.

Phillip Stoops enlisted at New Brighton, Pa on Sept 3 Sep, 1864 at the age of 23. He was 5' 91/2" tall, had blue eyes and dark hair, of fair complexion, and his occupation was a farmer. Mercer Township, Butler County, 23rd District was given credit for Phillips enlistment. He was also given a bounty of $100.00, of which he received $33.33 at the time of mustering in.

As was the case with a lot of the men that were in the 6th PA Heavy Artillery they thought that were enlisting into the 5th PA Heavy Artillery under Col. Gallupe. The 5th PA Heavy Artillery had recruited too many men, so the state created the 6th and then assigned the remaining to that unit. There was a lot of discontent among the men, but once they were taken out of Camp Reynolds and sent to Washington that all changed.

Nothing out of the ordinary was found in his records at the archives. He served his enlistment within the Northern Virginia and Washington City area. He was mustered out of the service with his company on June 13, 1865.

Upon his return from the war he married Eleanor Jane Vogus on June 20, 1866 at the residence of J.R. Coulter, Venango County, Pennsylvania (Information from Pension Declaration - 4 June, 1898). When asked on his Pension Declaration if there was a record of the marriage he stated, "Think Not". The couple had children and they were listed on two different Pension Declaration forms with some discrepancies in dates.
