George Washington Mallary (Mallory) was born in Indiana County, Pa in about 1837. He was one of three known children of Sampson and Nancy Mallary. He had a brother named Josiah D. and a sister named Mary. The 1850 census shows him living with his parents and siblings in Neschannock Township, Lawrence County, Pa.

On July 15, 1859, he married Cynthia Ann Craven in Mercer, Pa. The 1860 census places him and Cynthia in Darlington, Beaver County, Pa. where his occupation is listed as a coal miner.

He enlisted along with his brother Josiah in Company M of the 212th Pennsylvania Volunteers on September 2 and both were mustered into service on 3 September 1864. This was just 10 days before the birth of his first child, George M. The brothers were both mustered out together with the unit on 13 June 1865.

George and his family lived in Hubbard, Trumble County from approximately 1868 to 1880. His occupation is again given as a coal miner in the 1880 Hubbard, Ohio census. Sometime in 1880 the he bought property in Chewton, Wayne Twp., Lawrence county and moved there with his family, which had grown to include 9 children. In addition to George M. were Anna M., Charles C., Edward S., Blanch A., Carrie M., John D., Maude and Garie Belle.

On June 28, 1881 he was killed in a mining accident. He was working in an iron mine when he was killed by a falling rock. He is buried in the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Ellwood City, Pa. George's grave is marked with a single stone that includes his loving wife Cynthia.
