Pvt. David Sober

Died: October 4, 1864 Fairfax Station Civil War Hospital, VA.
Buried: October 16, 1864 Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Leechburg, PA.

David was the fifth of 12 children born to Daniel Sober and Elizabeth Spiker Sober. The family lived in Allegheny Township on a 325 acre farm deeded in 1798 near present day Leechburg, PA.

David married Elizabeth Byrer and raised four children: William Harvey, Daniel Newton, John Frank and Nettie E. David owned a farm next to the old homestead and was a carpenter as well as a farmer.

On September 10, 1864 David joined the 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, 212th Pennsylvania of the Line. He was joined by his two brothers, George M. Sober and Daniel Sober, Jr.

David became ill shortly after arriving in Fairfax, VA and was taken to hospital in Fairfax Station Hospital. He died there on October 4, 1864 of (Typhoid Fever). His body was shipped home and his widow Elizabeth buried him on October 16, 1864. The family story is that his wife had a mental break down and never fully recovered after his death. She collected a pension till her eventual death in 1910.
