Daniel
W. HawkAt the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot, 6 inches tall, hazel eyes and dark hair.
He asked for an increase in his pension on Sept 14, 1897 at the age of 69 years old. His illnesses were claimed to be rheumatism, palsy of the left arm, piles, chronic diarrhea and disease of the rectum. He claims that he developed the chronic diarrhea while at Burkes Station and had to be sent to Ft. Ethan Allen's Hospital. The surgeon's reports show no such problem for him. The pension office went back to the official unit records and found the locations of the units during the time of the supposed hospitalization.
November 1 through 16, 1864 the unit was at Pohick Station, Va.
November 16 through December 31, 1864 the unit was in the Chain Bridge, Va.
area.
The pension office went more in-depth to the Regimental Order Book and found:
November 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8 of 1864 at Fairfax Station, Va.
November 15 - 22, 24, 25, 29, 30, December 3, 4, 6, 7, 12-14, 16-18, 20-14,
26, 30 and 31 of 1864 at Ft. Ethan Allen and Battery Winfield Scott
His increase was turned down because he could not prove that the chronic diarrhea was caused by his service to the Union.
There was information on his marriage. Rev. Johnson conducted the marriage at Clarkesville, Mercer Co., Pa.

I do know that Daniel and his wife Sarah (Risher) are both buried in Haywood
Cemetery, Shenango Township, Mercer, PA. The local Genealogical Society created
an index from the headstones. I've written the cemetery but they don't have
any records.
From family records, Daniel died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Fair,
in Leechburg, Allegheny, PA. I've written the county but pre-1905 deaths were
not required to be recorded in PA so that's a dead end.
I have a book entitled "Early German Hawk Families," by Ken Slaker
but Daniel's family is not mentioned except that Daniel is the husband of Sarah
Risher. It seems like there are 50,000 Hawk's in PA and many Daniel's.
Primarily, I'm looking for the names/dates/locations of Daniel's parents and
siblings.
