Participated Alexandria Red Cross Drill!
I want to thank the 9 volunteers
who supported the first Red Cross Disaster Drill in which we, Alexandria, ARES,
have participated in many years.
Ian, N8IK was the EOC shadow, He was kept running while Victoria injected new and interesting problems into the system via ham radio. As net control I have to say she and her radio operator kept us working. Great job Ian.
Marshall, KI4MWP, was the Net Control backup, runner, and later shadow for Tom and Scott the two Red Cross leads for the event. They kept him working and then left him behind at the shelter. Good thing we had others to recover Marshall or we might still be looking for him.
Randy KI4MWQ and Sandy KI4QNG, had a thankless job. I sent them to the Fire Training Center to simulate the City EOC and see whom they could contact from the mobile. While we did not send much traffic their way, the knowledge of how simplex works is valuable and the Red Cross was very impressed with our experiments. It was HOT out in the parking lot and NCS should have call both Randy and Sandy in sooner. Great job.
Rich, KA4GFY, KI4FON and Jim KG4QWC made up the Shelter team with Jim trying to help the Red Cross utility truck get their Red Cross radio operational. The Shelter at Mt. Vernon Rec Center was the focal point of the drill and all did a great job handling traffic and solving problems.
Harry, N4CWP, was another part of our experiment, With support from Alexandria Hospital, Harry checked out both simplex and repeater access from both the parking lot and the board room at the hospital. We now know that we do need to get the antenna relocated to the top of the hospital. Harry later joined us at the Chapter House. Harry also waded into deep water to get the antenna for the Chapter house up and running saving yours truly a swim. Another future project will be putting two dual band sticks up at the Chapter house, but that's part of a larger plan to upgrade our ARES infrastructure.
Feedback from the Red Cross staff was that we did an A+ job. They were all very impressed with everyones performance. I expect that we will be invited back to work with them more often.
Again, Many Many Thanks to all of you who helped out.

7/20/2007 Alexandria Red
Cross Drill!
They will be doing a practice drill on Saturday 7/28 starting
at 9 AM. At this point it may be a small drill with ONE Shelter at Mt. Vernon
Recreation Center and at the Red Cross Chapter House. Depending on the number
of volunteers who are free that Saturday, it may be expanded with someone at the
City EOC, Hospital, and Hospital ER to test conductivity. If you can volunteer,
please contact Rick at N4ASX@arrl.net and
list what equipment you have that you would like to exercise. (They will need
to set up some kind of portable antenna up on the Chapter house and one at the
shelter.)

Club Order for Ham Call CDs
Every year about this
time, Ian N8IK orders HamCall CDs at the club discount rate. This callbook integrates
nicely with lots of logging programs including our Field Day standard Win-EQF,
or it can be used as a stand-alone program. If you are a DXer or contester you
really need a current callbook. HamCall is released monthly and you get 6 months
of free internet monthly updates. Quite a bargain for $35. (That's $30 + $5 to
the club as a fundraiser). Contact Ian at N8IK@arrl.net
to place your order.

2/27/2007 Dulles Emergency Preparedness
Drill Scheduled for May 5, 2007
Every three years, Dulles Airport holds
a disaster drill that lasts ALL DAY. INOVA hospitals use this drill for their
certification test as well. There will be an area wide call out of all ARES volunteers
(who can participate). For the last drill the club provided operators at Alexandria
Hospital and we had APRS operators help with bus (ambulance) tracking. The details
of the drill are not yet known, but the scenario may be similar as in the past
and we will again support the hospitals and some of our folks may be asked to
operate at Dulles. If you are available to support this exercise, please contact
Rick at N4ASX@arrl.net so we'll have a headcount
of who to call and how much of an effort we can support. For fun we may want to
offer the trailer as an on-site operations unit.
